Yesterday was the 3 of June. It was my brother's birthday. He's finally 18! Though it was also an important part of history in my country, Uganda. We celebrated the 22 Ugandan Martyrs that were burnt at a stake because of their beliefs by a jealous king.
I always thought that being a Christian was great because it's one of the largest and main religion in the world. What I didn't know is that some people from my homeland paid the price because of their faith. Just because they were Christians and Catholics. I'd never thought a king of my tribe could be so cruel to his own people. This year has definitely been extraordinary because when I was younger, we went to the Uganda Martyrs' shrine which was my sister's college. Though I thought I was going to see my sister. I'd see several people arrive at the college but never asked why until now.
I've never been one to be ashamed of where I come from but I was yesterday because it was very distressing to me that I knew a little of my history. So I spent my day watching news from home and praying with the people at the shrine. It broke my heart when I found out the youngest of the Martyrs was only 13/14 years old. I don't think I would have been that brave! It definitely made me re-think my whole perspective about Christianity. I'm going to learn more about my country's and my own history as today has been an eye opener to reality. I now know that being a Christianity is more than saying you are one, you have to say it and mean as well as live the life. Be true to yourself and your God.
R.I.P Uganda Martyrs. You gave us so much, we wish you didn't have to go the way you did. You'll always be in our hearts. Thank you for your sacrifice. From Uganda, the Pearl of Africa.
